Research the Company and Team

Gain a detailed understanding of the company’s culture, values, and the nature of their projects. Tailor your comments to show how your skills meet their specific demands and goals. Learn about the team’s structure and dynamics, if feasible.

Ask Relevant Questions

Prepare relevant questions to ask the interviewers. Inquire about the team’s working practices, obstacles, and how they define success in agile projects. This displays your genuine interest and commitment to the position and the organisation.

What are the Scrum Master’s responsibilities?

The Scrum Master coaches the Scrum Team. They help to clarify how to utilise Scrum, what the values are, the need of transparency, and the necessity to continuously review and adjust the process.

Here are some of the key aspects of Scrum that you should understand.

1.Scrum Master Role

The Scrum Master is a true team leader, and their leadership style differs significantly from traditional project management. The Scrum Master’s primary purpose is to teach and develop the team so that it can manage itself. The Scrum Master does not solve all problems, but rather teaches the Team how to do so. Understanding these fundamentals will help you think in the proper way and answer difficult questions during an interview.

Questions for the Scrum Master Interview

Scrum Master interview questions on the basics could include the following:

  • Describe the Scrum Master’s responsibilities.
  • What constitutes a self-managed team?
  • How can a Scrum Master develop a self-managed team?
  • What leadership style is appropriate for a Scrum Master?

2.Agile and Scrum Theory

A thorough understanding of agile and scrum theory is required of all candidates. We are referring especially to the most recent edition of the Scrum Guide, as well as the Agile Manifesto and its Twelve Principles. Try to understand the Manifesto, the significance of each phrase, and how to apply it in the actual world. Also, be prepared to demonstrate what benefits the initiative will bring.

Frequently, candidates arrive at an interview and have no idea what the difference between Sprint Review and Retrospective is, or they are unconcerned about the old and new editions of the Scrum Guide. The Scrum guide is only 14 pages long; even if you are a Scrum Master or have already read it, review it before the interview.

Scrum Master interview questions on Agile and Scrum theory.

  • What is Agile?
  • What is Scrum?
  • What benefits does Scrum provide us?
  • How is Scrum organised?
  • What is the aim of each Scrum event?
  • Which events are required for the Scrum Master to attend?
  • What is a Daily Meeting, and how should it be conducted?
  • What agenda would you have for Sprint planning?

3.Coaching and Facilitation

The Scrum Master must be an effective facilitator, therefore prepare to address questions on meeting facilitation. It’s beneficial to understand at least a few facilitation strategies. To pass the Scrum Master practical interview questions, prepare to answer both theoretical questions and the inevitable follow-up: “How, exactly?” So, for example, as a situational interview question for Scrum Master, you would be asked to hold a Retrospective – how would you go about it?

The Scrum Guide refers to the Scrum Master as a coach. A set of coaching skills, strategies, and tools are required for successful collaboration with both the Product Owner and the Developers.

Scrum Master interview questions on facilitation and coaching:

  • What is facilitation or coaching?
  • What facilitation approaches do you know?

4.Backlog management questions for a Scrum Master interview

Product Owners are typically entrepreneurs who are unfamiliar with Scrum and how to handle the Backlog effectively. Knowing alternative prioritisation approaches will also be beneficial.

Product owners struggle to organise their backlogs. As a Coach, the Scrum Master must assist in dealing with the chaos caused by disorganised User Stories. You should be familiar with the User Story Mapping technique for organising requirements, as well as how to use the Backlog in a task tracking system. For example, as guidance, you may suggest creating Epics and Features in the Backlog, grouping them, and organising User stories around them.

Scrum Master Interview Questions Regarding Product Backlog Management:

  • What is a product backlog?
  • What are the product and sprint goals?
  • Provide an example of a well-formed user story.
  • What is the difference between the Definition of Done and the Acceptance Criteria?
  • What Is the Definition of Ready?
  • What is a product backlog refinement?

What are the terms SMART and INVEST?

5.Team Management

Not just the product owner, but also the developers, may require assistance in becoming Agile team members. Not all team members will have experience working with Scrum, and you may even find that the team sabotages some of the Scrum events. What would you do in such situations?

Scrum Master

When the team does not embrace Scrum as a method, recall the Scrum values of commitment, focus, openness, respect, and courage. Explain to the team the benefits of each and why we need each event, particularly Sprint Reviews and Retrospectives. Keep in mind that many people find it difficult to change the way they work and think, especially if they have previously taken an entirely different approach.

A Scrum Master candidate should understand the stages of team formation as well as conflict resolution approaches.

  • Scrum Master interview questions for team management:
  • What constitutes a self-managed team?
  • What are the Scrum values?
  • What stages of team formation are you familiar with?
  • What conflict resolution tactics do you use?
  • What are the advantages of using Scrum?
