Kubernetes is open source container orchestration platform which automates many manual procedures which are involved in deploying, managing and scaling containerised applications.

Kubernetes clusters:

The cluster together groups of hosts which are running Linux containers and kubernetes helps us easily and efficiently manage the clusters. Kubernetes clusters which can span hosts all over on premise, public, private or hybrid clouds. Kubernetes is an ideal platform for hosting cloud native applications which require rapid scaling like real time data streaming through the Apache Kafka.

Kubernetes was developed and designed by the engineers at google. Google was an early contributor to the Linux container technology and also generates more than 2 billion container deployments a week that are powered by its internal platforms. Red Hat was one of the companies to work with Google on Kubernetes.

The main advantage of Kubernetes in the environment is optimizing app dev of all the cloud which gives us the platform to schedule and run containers on the clusters of physical or may be virtual machines. It also helps us fully to implement and also rely on the container based infrastructure in the production environments. It is because Kubernetes is all about automation of operational tasks, we can do many of the same things other application platforms or management systems allow us to do for the containers. Developers will create cloud-native apps with Kubernetes as a runtime platform for using Kubernetes patterns. These patterns are the tools a Kubernetes developer needs to build the container based applications and services.

With Kubernetes we can

  •  To orchestrate containers all over the multiple hosts.
  • To make better use of hardware to maximize resources that needed to run our enterprise apps.
  •  To control and also automate application deployments and updates.
  • For mount and also storage to run the stageful apps.
  • To scale containerised applications and also their resources on the fly.
  • Here the Health check and self heal our apps with the auto replacements, auto-restart and auto-replication and also autoscaling.

How does Kubernetes work?

The working Kubernetes deployment is a cluster. We can visualize a Kubernetes in two parts, the control plane and compute machines or may be nodes. Each node has its own Linux environment and also could be either a physical or virtual machine.

The control plane will be responsible for maintaining the desired state for the cluster, like which applications are running and which container images they use. Compute machines actually run the application and also workloads.

Kubernetes will run upto top of an operating system and also interacts with pods of containers running on the nodes. The Kubernetes control plane takes the commands from the administrator and relays on those instructions to the computer machines. This works with a multitude of services to automatically decide which node  will be best suited for the task. It also allocates resources and assigns the pods in that node to fulfill the request work.

Here the most desired state of Kubernetes cluster will define the applications or may be other workloads should be running, along with which images they use, which resources should be made available to them and also other configuration details. From the infrastructure perspective there will be little change to manage containers. We control over containers that just happens at a higher level, providing us better control without the need to micromanage the separate container or node.

The majority of non-premises Kubernetes deployments will run on top of existing virtual infrastructure with a growing number of deployments on bare metal servers. This will be natural evolution in data centers. Kubernetes servers are the deployment and lifecycle management tools that will be containerised applications and separate tools that are used to manage infrastructure resources.
